Minimisalism and Intention

For me, being minimal helped remove the fog and clutter. Once I committed to this, my life literally became more focused. I could zero in on what I deemed most important of my time.

Minimalism has certainly gained popularity over the years. Mainly due to its simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. If you're considering incorporating a minimalist approach to living, and I encourage you whole-heartedly, here are some tips to get you started:

  1. Declutter your home: Start by decluttering your home, getting rid of things you no longer need or use. Keep only the essentials and things that bring you joy. My simple rule is if you haven’t used it in 12-months and it doesn’t have a different emotional connection to your family or friends, get rid of it. A clutter-free environment can help reduce stress and anxiety, and make your home feel more spacious and organised.

  2. Minimise your wardrobe: A minimalist wardrobe can save you time, money, and space. Keep only the clothes that you wear regularly and donate or sell the rest. Choose high-quality, versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched easily. This will help you simplify your daily routine and reduce decision fatigue.

There’s plenty of different programs out there, but I personally really connected with Project 333, which is a minimalist fashion challenge designed to help individuals simplify their wardrobes and embrace a more intentional approach to clothing. The concept revolves around selecting only 33 items of clothing, including apparel, accessories, jewellery, and shoes, to wear for a period of three months. I like it because it works with the seasons and gives you the chance to change things up four times a year.

  3. Invest in quality items: Instead of buying cheap, low-quality items that need to be replaced frequently, invest in high-quality, durable items that will last longer. This not only saves you money in the long run, but it also reduces waste and environmental impact.

  4. Embrace digital minimalism: Consider minimising your digital footprint by reducing the amount of time spent on social media and other digital platforms. Unsubscribe from email newsletters you no longer need, delete unused apps and files, and prioritise quality over quantity.

  5. Appreciate simple pleasures: Life is richer when you stop to appreciate the little things. Take the time to enjoy simple pleasures like a cup of tea, a good book, or a walk in nature. This can help you cultivate a sense of gratitude and contentment in your daily life. It's true that the best things in life are free! For me that’s going for a run, walking my dog, playing and laughing with my kids, reading and growing my understanding of our world.

By incorporating a minimalist approach to living requires a shift in mindset towards simplicity, mindfulness, and intentionality. By decluttering your home, minimising your wardrobe, investing in quality items, embracing digital minimalism, and appreciating simple pleasures, you can create a more fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle.
